Top 5 Myths about Equine Assisted Therapies

Equine-assisted counselling and therapy is growing in popularity, but with that growth come a few common misconceptions. These myths can discourage people from trying this impactful approach to healing and personal growth. Let’s take a moment to set the record straight by debunking the top 5 myths about equine-assisted therapy and counselling.

Myth #1: Equine-assisted therapy is only for kids.

Fact: While it’s true that children often benefit from equine-assisted therapy, it’s by no means limited to them. Adults, including professionals dealing with stress, anxiety, and trauma, also find profound value in this form of therapy. Horses offer a non-judgmental space for self-reflection, which is equally effective for adults of all ages seeking personal development or emotional support.

Myth #2: Equine-assisted therapy involves horse riding.

Fact: There’s no horse riding involved at all in Unbridled Equine's Equine Assisted Learning or Counselling sessions. In fact, you don't even need to share space with the horses or have any contact at all. We follow your lead and if we do make contact, the focus is on interacting with the horses through groundwork, which can include grooming, leading, or simply being in the presence of the horse. This allows clients to form a bond and gain insights into their own emotions and behaviours. Horses, as highly sensitive animals, mirror human emotions, providing unique opportunities for personal growth and self-awareness without ever having to saddle up.

Myth #3: Equine-assisted therapy isn’t evidence-based.

Fact: There is a growing body of research supporting the effectiveness of equine-assisted therapy. Studies have shown positive outcomes for individuals struggling with a variety of issues, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and relational difficulties. Equine-assisted interventions have been recognized for their therapeutic value and are supported by evidence, particularly in the areas of emotional regulation, communication skills, and trauma recovery.

Myth #4: You need to be an experienced horse handler to benefit.

Fact: No prior horse experience is necessary to participate in equine-assisted therapy. Sessions are designed to be accessible to people from all walks of life, regardless of their experience with horses. The therapy sessions are facilitated by trained professionals who guide the interactions between the client and the horse, ensuring that everyone is safe and comfortable.

Myth #5: It’s only for people who love animals.

Fact: While a natural affinity for animals can enhance the experience, it’s not a requirement. Many people who have never spent time around horses—or who even feel apprehensive at first—find great value in equine-assisted therapy. The unique emotional connection and reflective opportunities horses provide often transcend any initial hesitation, allowing clients to work through deep emotional issues in a new and powerful way.

By dispelling these common myths, we hope more people can feel confident exploring the benefits of equine-assisted learning and counselling

sessions. Whether you’re dealing with emotional stress, trauma, or simply seeking personal growth, equine-assisted counselling offers a powerful, evidence-based approach that’s not just for kids, doesn’t require horse riding, and is accessible to everyone.
